4 Tips for Visiting Great Sand Dunes National Park

Growing up in Idaho we have actually spent a lot of time around sand dunes. But the Bruneau Sand Dunes in Idaho are nothing compared to the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado! We definitely wanted to check out these massive dunes and see the view from the top.

We had such a great time and are so glad we made this stop on our road trip! It is such a unique National Park. We did learn a few things we wish we had known before we went. Here they are!

How to Dress

We thought we would be prepared growing up around dunes but I was not prepared for how chilly it would be! We went early in the morning to avoid the heat but then it ended up being much cooler than I thought. It was also a windy day and since the wind often blows make sure to bring a windbreaker and pants to protect you from the blowing sand!

Speaking of blowing sand, bring eye protection! Even if it is not sunny you will want sunglasses to prevent sand from getting in your eyes. In the summer the sand can be very hot so you will want to still cover your body to avoid burns. Just make sure your clothing is breathable so you don’t overheat on the trek to the top!

Pack a Lunch

The hike to the top of the tallest sand dune is way longer than I thought it would be. Round trip it takes 6 hours to get to Star Dune, the tallest dune. You will be worn out from trekking in the sand and you’ll be hungry! Pack lots of water, snacks, and a lunch!

You can do some shorter hikes to the other dunes and they are also super cool! The are about 2 hours round trip. You may still want snacks as it is a work out!!

Where to Camp

My favorite thing about this park is that it is right by tons of BLM land that offer free camping and boondocking! There is some paid camping in the park but there is a ton of wide open space for boondocking within a 20 minute drive of the park.

These spots will fill up during busy times of year so get there early to get a good spot! Also, the sky is so clear and full of stars! We spent half the night just laying on top of our car star gazing. Definitely a great camp site in my opinion.

Activities

If you are feeling adventurous you can always rent a sand board to go boarding down the dunes! If boarding isn’t your thing maybe a sled will do! We grew up doing these actives at Bruneau and it is always a good time. We did not rent on our trip to Great Sand Dunes but I know from experience how fun it is!

In other places around the park there are some nature trails and fishing available as well. Just plan ahead so you can get any equipment and permits you may need.
