6 Reasons to Visit Savannah, GA

6 Reasons to Visit Savannah, GA

I’m just going to be 100% upfront and honest, Savannah, GA is one of my favorite cities in the USA. It has charm, it is quaint, it has entertainment, and the houses are GORGEOUS! In 2020 we were lucky enough to visit around the holidays and did you know it turns into something straight out of a Hallmark movie around Christmas!

We will get into that more but I need you to know up front that I am obsessed with this city and will live here one day. Or at least visit ever Christmas since it is only like a 5 hour drive from where we live in Florida!

Historical Tours

The entire town of Savannah is charming and historical and you could learn so much just by walking around! But I highly recommend taking one of the tours that takes you through the city and shows you all of the hidden gems. From buildings to statues to plaques at the parks there is something in every corner we can learn about!

I wouldn’t call myself a history buff but I do love learning about the places I travel to. One of the best parts of traveling is being able to experience life outside of your own and sometimes that means taking a stroll into the past! Savannah is the absolute perfect place to get a glimpse of American history.

Graveface Museum

Warning: This is NOT for everyone! I am a die hard true crime junkie and spend so much of my free time reading articles and listening to podcasts about crime cases. This museum focuses on the bizarre and fascinating true crime cases from the last several decades.

This museum is not for the faint of heart but it is 100% someplace you should visit if you love twisted, strange, and true crime! If you know me, you know I mostly went here for the art work of John Wayne Gacy. I am fascinated by all things true crime but this museum goes far beyond that including many items of interest like the body of a two headed calf and more.

River Street

River Street is this gorgeous part of town right on the water that is full of shops, restaurants, and museums! It is so quaint and charming all the way along and it feels as if you have been transported back in time! The cobblestone side walks and old brick buildings are more than captivating. There are so many monuments in this area that remind us of the history not only in Georgia but our nation. It is truly like a time machine!

It is a staple of Savannah and a part of town you just cannot pass up while you are visiting. Also, bring your camera because if you are anything like me, this is the most Instagramable part of town for sure! Even the stair cases and alleyways look like something out of a fairytale and I wanted to capture every inch of this town!

Forsyth Park

This park is one of many amazing parks in Savannah but became my favorite because the beauty and size. Nearly 20 acres of land in the middle town make up Forsyth Park and every inch of it looks magical. The trees, fountains, greenery, and all of it are just amazing!

It is one of those places that you just feel at peace walking through. It is also home to playgrounds, basketball courts, and a splash pad for those who are looking for some fun in the middle of the day! What I love most is that it is right within walking distance from downtown and River Street!

Fort Pulaski

This for is just a little bit outside of Savannah but definitely worth the drive if you are able. Our road trip was mostly about visiting national parks and monuments so of course this one was already on our list. It ended up being so much cooler than I had expected and we spent a lot of time walking through this fort!

It was much larger than I had expected and much of the fort itself was open to the public to just walk through and explore. With each room providing information about the historical context around the Fort and what had happened there.

Christmas in Savannah!!

Okay, this is obviously only a seasonal reason to visit but I think it is the best reason of all! We were lucky enough to be visiting the beginning of December and were able to experience many of the Christmas traditions! For example, while we were there we were able to go see a boat light parade on the river! How cool is that?!

The entire city looked like something plucked straight out of a Hallmark movie and I couldn’t stop gushing about the lights and decorations. We were even able to see a giant gingerbread house!!!! You will want to look at the Christmas Calendar of events before planning your trip as every day there is something new and different in the month of December.

Have you ever been to Savannah, GA? What was your favorite thing to do while visiting here?!
