Whether you like it or not, alcohol has become a rather large part of the average person’s life, that probably includes you as well. Finding comfort at the bottom of a glass is one way to look at it, but the more socially acceptable and responsible take is social drinking. In order to unwind after work, and actually be able to carry out a decent conversation without being overly stressed since your work problems never left you even though you’re out of the office, people drink.

Of course, being too dependant on it is no good either, since it essentially leads down a long and lonely path of alcoholism, but let’s not get into that for the moment because the topic has been done to death already. Let’s look at social drinking, while it may not be the best use of your time in the world, it is definitely somewhat comforting. So, instead of going out, drinking way too much and promising yourself that you will literally never drink again the next morning, let’s see how you can make an evening much more enjoyable without feeling like a degenerate the next morning.

Try something new

Rather than downing beer after beer just because it’s basically the only thing your coworkers do, why not try something new and exciting? Not only will the experience itself supplement enough excitement to stop you from drowning yourself in needlessly large amounts of alcohol, but it will also probably be much more enjoyable.

There are many things people often never reach for because they have no idea what they are, but honestly, have you ever asked yourself what is a moscow mule? Probably not, because the name sounds somewhat unappetizing, and not the first thing you’d think to order at a bar.

However, with its ginger beer and wedge of lime, it creates a rather tangy and refreshing cocktail that has a bit of a kick to it. Not to mention, it greatly compliments food dishes, making it a great addition to your social dinner.

A good night out isn’t all about drinking

Some of you reading this might’ve started rolling your eyes the moment you saw that line, but the truth is that there really is much more to social interaction than just getting hammered. No wonder people are saying that dinner conversation is a lost art, when people even have trouble speaking to each other at the bar or pub. After all, unless you are already at the stage where the only way to sleep is to down a few shots before bed, going to the bar or pub or restaurant, or anywhere else where alcohol might be involved to some extent, it is all about being social.

We are social creatures, and we enjoy conversation, so why not make that conversation a bit more interesting than someone spilling out their guts after their 9th pint because they cannot keep their composure anymore? Get some food, sit down, have a laugh, sip on your drink, whether it’s alcoholic or not, and just relax. Enjoy the ambience, the fact that you have some free time, and that you still have a few hours before you need to get to sleep so you can wake up for work the next day.

  1. I like your idea that branching out and trying something new could be a fun experience. An old friend of mine is coming to town next week and we were talking about going out for a drink together. Doing something we haven’t experienced before sounds like a good way to make the most of the opportunity.

  2. I totally can relate to this! I actually am going to try something new with our drink the next we all meet-up. Thanks for your tips 🙂 Cheers!

  3. I can’t remember the last time I was able to go out and have drinks with a friend! I have two young kids and a crazy life so I just never seem to get around to it! Plus, my one best friend has kiddos even younger than mine and my other best friend has anxiety issues, so trying to get us all out together pretty much never happens! Thank you for this post, I’m going to try harder to get out with my girls!

  4. Love this! I’ve never been much of a drinker, so I’m always looking for ways to be social without the alcohol factor! Haha Thanks for this idea! Xo

  5. I love trying new drinks that I’ve never tried because beer after beer is definitely not my style (nor can my stomach handle it, haha). I love the social aspect of drinking but don’t do it too often!

  6. I actually love this. I have recently stopped drinking because I was doing it waaayyy too much. So, this blog post really hit it for me.
